With school ended, Donovan finds himself at work. It sucks, but there's bills that have got to be paid. The deli itself is slow at the moment, but that doesn't mean that it won't pick up soon enough. Donovan's currently behind the counter, wearing the deli's uniform, cleaning some metal pans before he refills the food items that they contained. He's softly humming softly to himself as he passes the time.
Creeeeeeeak. The front door opens slowly and a blonde haired head pokes inside the deli. Grey eyes dart back and forth as if looking for something for a few moments before the door opens completely and Alice scurries inside, tugging along a backback slung over one shoulder. She hurries up to the queue, eyes sliding up to peer over the highlighted menu options, gnawing on her lower lip and swaying slightly in place. Once her turn is available, the blonde starts as if suddenly snapped out of a reverie and offers a nervous, twitchy smile. "Uhm, h-h-hello. Uhm. I'd l-like... um... I'd like a f-footlong roasted chicken breast sub, p-please."
Donovan glances back over his shoulder as he hears the front door open, putting a smile on his lips. "Welcome to New Leaf Deli." He offers to the girl as she steps inside and makes her way up to the counter. As she gives her order, he nods his head. "Sure thing." He offers. "What kind of bread would you like that on?" He asks, making his way to the bread warmer.
Bread? Oh noes! Alice's eyes widen behind her glasses and she looks like she's about to panic. She remains rather stunned to inaction for a moment before shifting her weight on her feet again, eyes darting up towards the board then back down to the young man taking her order. "I... I d-don't know," she finally says, "What, um... w-what do you have available?"
Donovan smiles and chuckles softly at the girl's reaction. "We have white, wheat, italian parmesan, honey wheat oat... pretty much whatever they got at Subway, we got it too." He offers with a soft chuckle. He looks at the girl for a few moments, not really recognizing her, but then again, he doesn't know a lot of people in town. "You new in town?" He asks, taking a guess.
Those grey eyes blink owlishly behind the glasses as she peers back at the young man, eyebrows raised. An uncomfortable, awkward silence follows as she just stares blankly. "Uhm, y-yeah, I am," she finally says, filling the dead air, "Uhm. J-just move here, like, a w-week or so ago. Italian parmesan!" This last is called out rather loudly and quickly, the blonde immediately blushing furiously and offering a sheepish smile, "Er, t-that's the kind of bread. If, uh, if it wasn't obvious."
Donovan smiles and nods. "I figured as much. I've been here a little over a month or so, myself. I recognized that out of place look that I had when I first came here." He says with a chuckle, getting startled a bit by the sudden outburst of her bread choice. "Sure thing." He says, getting the bread and starts to cut it open with a clean knife. "Cheese?"
A nervous, twitchy smile flickers to life on the corners of Alice's lips and she nods vigorously. "Oh, oh, y-yes, please! Uhm, p-provolone, if you have it." The blonde then adjusts her glasses, gnawing again at her lower lip, "You, uh... y-you're new, too, huh?" She narrows her eyes just slightly then pops them wide open again, "Do you g-go to North Shore? That's, um... t-that's where I go."
Donovan smiles and nods his head as he starts to work on the sub, humming to himself slightly. He looks up at her as she asks about the school, nodding his head. "Yeah. I moved here a little over a month ago from Seattle. I go to North Shore too." He says as he looks up at her. "I'm Donovan. Donovan Kincaid." He says with a smile. "I'd shake your hand, but..." He trails off and holds up his glove covered hands.
Another awkwardly long pause ensues as Alice stares at Donovan for several moment before breaking out into a cascade of coquettish, nervous titters. Currently, the young blonde teen is standing in line of the deli, talking with Donovan who (clad in is deli uniform) is currently making her sammich. "T-thats, um, t-that's fine," she stutters in response to the other teen, "I'm, um... m-my name is Alice Starr. P-p-pleased to meet you, Donovan." She hesitates, suddenly looking unsure and gnawing on her lower lip, "Mister Kincaid?"
Donovan smiles at Alice, noticing the stuttering, but doesn't mention it. He continues to work on the sandwich as he speaks with the girl. "Donovan is fine. There's no Mister Kincaid's in my family." He says, referring to the usual joke of 'That's my father'. He glances down at the sub for a moment before he looks up to Alice again. "Did you want that toasted?" He asks as he finishes placing the last of the cheese slices on the sandwich before tossing the unused slices back in its container.
The door opens and Sybil makes her way in with a bounce to her step. The pale haired blonde is listening to her mp3 player and she prances inside pauses and removes her earphones tucking them and her player into the designer purse she carries on one arm. The purse is black soft leather with dark blue stitching on it. It matches Sybil's outfit perfectly, a sapphire blue blouse with a rather short black skirt and a pair of black flats with blue beads across their front. She practically screams fashionable and once everything is tucked away in her purse she heads for the counter with the confidence of one who knows what she wants. She glances over Alice as she steps into the line behind her looking from her to Donovan with a sharp sort of curiousity in her deep blue eyes.
"Oh, uhm, er," Alice says, flustered again by the question and swaying on her feet. She squints her eyes again, another of those awkward pauses filling the air before she speaks again. "Y... yes?" she asks, in the manner of a student called on in class who is only thirty-to-fifty percent sure of the answer. "Donovan," she suddenly repeats, face immediately snapping out of the confused expression, the blonde murmuring the name over and over to herself for several moments before silencing and once more affecting a blank stare at the poor guy behind the counter. "I would also like a cup of water," she blurts out after a moment, the words tumbling out of her in a stilted manner and at a too-rapid pace, "You managed to get this job so quickly after moving here, that must be nice."
When Sybil comes in, Alice does a double-take at her, eyes going wide and eyebrows arching. Her mouth slightly agape, the awkward teen just fixes the platinum-blonde with a stare that extends for quite a few uneasy seconds before her mouth snaps shut and the girl quickly averts her gaze, cheeks reddening in embarrassment. Her focus now becomes the counter where her sandwich is being made. Mm. Sandwich.
Donovan smiles and nods his head again once before he pulls the tray out of the toaster, scoops up the sammich before he puts it in the toaster and presses a button. At the request of water, he reaches over to one of the cups and offers it to her. "Here you are. There's a soda fountain over there." He says, pointing to it. "The water is the tab on the Sprite." He offers before he looks up at the door as it opens. "Welcome to New Leaf Deli. I'll be right with you." He calls out to Sybil with a tone of practiced joy, giving the girl a quick once over. He then returns his attention to Alice again. "Yeah. I was lucky enough to show up when they were hiring." He offers with a chuckle just as the toaster beeps. He scoops it out and puts it back on the counter. "What toppings would you like?" He asks Alice.
Blue eyes look Donovan over breifly and Sybil nods in response to the greeting looking to the gaping Alice and raises an eyebrow in question her eyes showing her curiousity as she looks the girl over carefully. "Yes? I'm pretty sure I don't have something on my face so what did I do to deserve /that/ kind of look?" She looks down at her outfit and brushes a pale strand of hair behind her ear before she fixes Alice with an intent look. She isn't being mean she is just curious at the moment.
Alice's eyes flicker upwards briefly as she is given the cup, the blonde quickly reaching out and snatching it with both hands. "T-thank you," she mumbles, shifting her weight on her feet again and eyes darting to the indicated soda fountain. She stares at the object, seemingly transfixed before jumping as Donovan addresses her again, her attention immediately snapping back to the young man. "T-t-toppings?" she asks, blinking several times before adjusting her glasses and peering owlishly over the counter, "Mrmn, uhm... c-can I have, um, mayo, black olives -- don't skimp on those, I like a lot of those --, lettuce and--" The blonde cuts herself off, hesitating before speaking again, "--do you have anything s-spicy? Like, um, red peppers or anything?"
And then Sybil speaks to her, and Alice's attention whips towards the other girl like a scrambler ride. She stares, wide-eyed, at the girl for a long, uncomfortable moment of silence before she speaks again, her voice coming out in a high-pitched squeak and words running together, "SorryIdidn'tmeantostaresorryI'mjustnotusedtosomanyprettypeoplearound!"
Donovan begins to start adding the toppings to the sub as Alice tells him what she wants, nodding at her question about the spicy food. "Yeah. We got onions and these pepper things. I think they're jalapenos." His eyes shifts to Sybil as she addresses Alice, keeping quiet since she wasn't talking to him. He just finishes putting on the toppings, occasionally glancing between the two.
Pale blonde brows raise further almost disappearing into Sybil's hair. She gives Alice a calculating look and then smirks playfully at the girl. "Its fine. I'm not offended or anything. Why would I be offended you /did/ say I was pretty after all yes? Now relax...I don't bite no matter what the rumors say about me." The first part of that is said completely serious but by that last sentance she is teasing the girl quite obviously. "Now I haven't seen you before so I will take a guess and say you are new here?" The curiousity returns and she glances to Donovan breifly and then back to Alice once more.
Alice's attention remains locked on Sybil before suddenly shifting back to Donovan in the manner of an earthquake. "No onions," she states flatly, voice suddenly bizarrely steady, "But jalapenos would be good." She hesitates, squirming uncomfortably in place, but offers up one of her twitchy, nervous smiles, "Uhm, t-thank you, Donovan."
Her attention then turns back to Sybil, eyes squinting behind her glasses as she locks an owlish glance on the other teen. "There are rumors that you bite?" she asks, deadpan before suddenly her eyes widen again, "Oh! Um, y-yes. I'm new here. I'm Alice. Uhm. H-hello." There is an uncomfortably long hesitation before the blonde thrusts out a hand to Sybil.
Donovan smiles and nods his head slightly as Sybil looks at him before he returns his attention to the sub before him, finishing up the toppings. Once he's finished, he cuts the sandwich in half and wraps it up quickly. "Here you are." He offers after putting the sub in a bag. You can pay for it at the register." He offers, pointing to the register at the end of the counter where his coworker stands at the ready. "And you're welcome." He says with a smile before he looks to Sybil. "What can I get for you?"
"Nice to meet you Alice. I'm Sybil." Sybil shakes the offered hand and releases it with a smile waiting for the girl to get her sandwhich and head for the register. She steps forward looking quickly over the menu and then looks to Donovan with a bright and pleasant smile. "Well I normally get salads but I think today I will get a sub. I feel the need to try something new...do you have whole wheat bread?" She glances breifly to Alice but for the most part is focused on Donovan now.
"Thanks!" Alice squeaks sharply in reply to Donovan, quickly snatching the sandwich and scurrying down the line to the register. She digs around in her jacket pockets for a while and produces a small wallet. The sound of velcro unfastening fills the air as she peels open the wallet and fumbles around for a couple bills, offering them to the person manning the register. A few moments later, she has her change and squawks out another high-pitched 'Thanks!' to the person there before toddling off to the soda fountain, fumbling with her wallet again and returning it to her pocket. Filling her cup with water, she passes nurmerous, nervous glances over her shoulder at Sybil and Donovan -- so much so that her cup begins to overflow and splashes down into the grate below the nozzles. Alice squeaks again, jumping back, takes a quick look around like a startled meerkat, then quickly beats a hasty retreat out of the deli.
