American Literature
Instructor: Mr. Zachery Pearce

This course introduces students to the rich and varied multicultural heritage of American literature. Students read a broad range of works that give voice to diverse perspectives on being American. The balance of contemporary and traditional readings enhances students’ knowledge of literary techniques and movements. We also emphasize close reading and critical writing skills. In the fall term, considerable attention is devoted to expository and critical writing. Students write frequently and concurrently study a variety of essays and other non-fiction forms, providing models for their own compositions. Required for Juniors.
Creative Writing
Instructor: Mrs. Tamera Giles
Period: 3
This course offers opportunities to improve writing skills and become more creative. The class activities are daily writing and thinking exercises, studying a variety of works by classic and contemporary writers and composing poems and stories.
Literary Analysis & Comp I
Instructor: Mrs. Tamera Giles
Period: 5
This course introduces students to developing their communication skills through the study of the English language, speech, composition, literature, and developmental reading. Additional major units of study include grammar, usage, sentence patterns, paragraph development, and dramatic form. Required for Freshmen.
Literary Analysis & Comp II
Instructor: Mr. Zachery Pearce
Period: 1
This course is designed to continue to develop a command of language skills. Students will study mythology of cultures other than the Greeks, Julius Caesar or another Shakespearean play, and a variety of additional literature selections. In addition, students will continue to develop multi-paragraph writing skills, including sentence structure, paragraph development, grammar, and usage skills. Required for Sophomores.
Journalism
Instructor: Mrs. Tamera Giles
Period: 7
Students who take this course will learn the elements of newspaper style. They will learn how to gather news and conduct interviews while they prepare articles for the school newspaper. All students will have the chance to tackle a range of assignments from hard news to feature stories, sports assignments to editorials.
Public Speaking
Instructor: Mr. Mike Black
Period: 3
This course is designed to give students an opportunity to express themselves in a variety of speaking situations and to help them feel at ease with oral communications. Students will gain experience by preparing and delivering a variety of talks such as demonstration, informative and persuasive speeches. Time will be devoted to selecting appropriate topics, gathering information, and organizing materials.
British & World Literature
Instructor: Mr. Mike Black
Period: 2
This course uses the study of select English and World literature and their authors as a base to continue to enhance the student’s vocabulary, writing skills, formally and creatively, and critical thinking. The approach to this course is chronological and also includes historical events and philosophies on each literary age. In addition, this course reviews the MLA style of research and documentation and involves a step-by-step approach to researching and organizing documented papers using the APA format. Required for Seniors.
