Garnet was born in Huntsville, Alabama to a nineteen year old mother who was betrothed in holy matrimony in a shotgun wedding to her highschool football star sweetheart. Her mother, Linda Oakley (née Cleveland), was both Homecoming and Prom Queen. She was captain of the debate team and cheerleading squad. She fell in love with Lewis Oakley with big hopes for college and becoming a lawyer. A year after graduation and during her freshman year of college, her mother became pregnant with Garnet. Three years later, Lewis left in the middle of the night and moved to where nobody has been able to contact him.
Garnet grew up in daycare, in after school programs, and in the local library while her mother struggled to pay the bills. Working sometimes three jobs, Linda felt terrible about rarely seeing her daughter and bought her a sewing machine for her ninth birthday. The little girl took to sewing like a duck to water and used whatever scraps she could find.
Now in highschool, Garnet attends classes with an interpreter and quickly ducks away from Ms. Arnold the first chance she gets. A small corgi-mix dog also travels with her, perhaps to alert her of things she can't hear.
She uses her clothing and fashion designs as currency and it seems like many girls have taken notice of the new-girl-in-school's fashion sense; her designs are certainly not off the rack.

- Garnet has a tiny company that she calls Garnet's Treasures. It isn't anything official, that's just what she calls the little outfit she has for creating people clothing. She doesn't charge an arm and a leg and views it more like social currency.
- She cannot hear. Exploring this fact would be very interesting as far as making social scenes work along with unique communicating types! She does read lips.
- Poor. Garnet doesn't exactly look it because she is able to sew things together that make her look classy. However, she is from a poor section of town and lives with her mother.
