| Jake is very guarded. It's not that he can't be friendly or even playful; its just that it only goes so far before acquaintances find themselves hitting a wall. And he isn't afraid to push people away if he feels they are getting too close. He is ashamed of his family's criminal past, but stubbornly proud that he's not a member of one of the rich and institutional families of Lantern Hill. This pride manifests itself in a strong aversion to authority and rules, but also a certain dignity of carriage. He has a stubborn streak a mile long.

- Public: The Merritt Family is bad news. Always has been, always will be. Jackson Merrit, Jake's father, is in prison for running a meth lab, and rumor has it that his mother is a user and spends most of the time sky-high. It's well known that Jake spent time in juvy after a bust for selling his dad's drugs, but there are other rumors as well, everything from robbery to kidnapping. He works at a local gas station part time, servicing cars, a job that keeps him dirty quite a bit and only enhances his bad rep.

- School: Pariah. Everyone knows Jake Merritt is bad news. For the 'good kids', socialites, jocks and nerds, it means he is to be avoided at all costs. Bad reputation is like a communicable disease, yo. For troublemakers its a mixed bag; he is sought out for nefarious connections by some, and persecuted by others. After all, if you can beat down the other bad boys it means you're the baddest, right? For all of his bad reputation, however, he's a decent student and does pretty well, especially at math. He might even have been an athlete if he had the time or inclination for school sports.

- Street: Jake used to run drugs for his dad and was a good source of meth up until the time his old man got arrested. He's also been known to be involved in other crime: breaking and entering, pickpocketing, larceny. He was busted for running drugs several years ago and spent time in juvenile detention. He hasn't been seen much on the street since his dad was incarcerated and rumor has it that he is laying low for the time being. There are also rumors that his dad is still very much connected to the criminal underworld from prison.
